As a domestic abuse survivor of all manner of abuses, I found Butler's article very offensive. Your article was difficult but necessary to read. We have no control over how things we read as abuse survivors affect us but things like these articles help process abuses that need more work to recover ourselves. Poems became my way to process my life through biblical counseling.
Thank you, Nancy. Poetry is a beautiful and powerful way to express and process trauma. I do a similar thing with my writing and music. I appreciate you reading. I know, it's hard. I'll say a prayer for your peace <3
Thank you Jennifer, I have called you a kindred spirit ever since I read your Open Letter to the PCA and OPC. The OPC and my pastor at the time walked with me until my ex-husbands excommunication in 2018. It was the right Pastor in God's timing to do the work. I was sent home in 1991 by my PCA pastoral staff and there was no follow-up.
I'm so, so sorry. I've heard many such stories. I was put under church discipline for writing that Open Letter. I was accused of lying, being crazy, and being a fake abuse survivor, but I was pretty quickly exonerated, and that pastor eventually resigned.
The church is a mess and NAPARC churches are no exception. I'm so glad you've found my writing encouraging. That makes it all worthwhile.
There is much work to be done to educate church leadership and hold them accountable. God gave me the courage to share my story because of women like you and Rachael Denhollander I took that step to tell my very personal story. To God be the glory! Looking forward to the road ahead.
Thank you for sharing this. It is so sad in our hyper-sexualized world that some feel the need to sexualize beautiful images in the Bible. Thank you for separating the theology from the filth.
Beautifully written, thank you. AND what a shame that the Gospel Coalition lost out on such an amazing piece for their publication! I think you should resubmit it!
I didn't see this when it came out. I'm appalled at how they asked you to write this, then declined to publish it. Butler's book shows a complete lack of female input... or any knowledge of female bodies or minds.... and turning down your article was a missed opportunity to let a woman speak to the topic. Shame on them. Well done to you.

So good, Jenn. Thank you.
Thanks Ashley!

This is just beautiful ~~ THANK YOU!
the orig. article was disheartening, and poisons any thoughts about "Christ in us, the hope of glory"
